Keisha left Maurice’s hospital room with their mother so she could get Kamir. Deisha was going to leave also but Maurice convinced her to stay behind. She wasn’t sure what she was going to say to him. They hadn’t spoken in over a year due to Deisha getting an abortion behind Maurice’s back and turning down his marriage proposal. She didn’t turn him down because she didn’t want to be his wife. Deisha was afraid of becoming a carbon copy of her mother more than anything in the world and didn’t think that she was wife material. Her childhood had left her damaged; an over achiever trying hard to prove that she was different from her mother.

Maurice was furious when he learned that Deisha aborted his child behind his back. She didn’t give him an option and what was even more hurtful was the fact that Deisha had turned him down when he asked her to be his wife. They had made it through so much, but that was unforgiveable in his eyes. To him, Deisha was afraid of commitment, selfish and self-absorbed in a hell that had ended long ago.

He stared at her for a long time before finally saying something. “How have you been?”

“I’ve been good,” Deisha replied nervously. She began ringing her hands together again. Maurice looked at her and smiled.

“I see old habits die hard,” Maurice said with a grin.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

Maurice pointed to her hands. “You ring your hands when you’re nervous. You pull the bottom of your shirt or jacket when you’re scared.” Deisha noticed she was about to pull the bottom of her leather jacket and stopped. Instead, she put her hand behind her back. Maurice smiled at her again and shook his head.

“What about you? How have you been?” Deisha asked back.

“Oh you know; same o-same-o. But I figured I’d break up the monotony and get a cap busted in my ass,” he joked, trying to make light of the situation. Deisha chuckled. She caught the way he was staring at her and started ringing her hands together again. “Stop that,” Maurice said.

“I can’t help it,” Deisha laughed.

“Do I make you nervous?”

Deisha hesitated for a moment. “No, don’t be ridiculous.”

They fell silent for a moment. Deisha couldn’t take the way Maurice was staring at her, almost as if he was studying her. She looked out of the window to avoid his glare.

“Can I ask you a question?” Maurice asked.

“Sure.”

“Why did you change your mind and gave me back the ring?” Maurice asked.

Deisha had a feeling that question was coming. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “It wasn’t you, Maurice. It was me,” she started.

Maurice interrupted her. “Please don’t give me that “it’s not you, it’s me” bullshit. I’m better than that.”

“No Maurice, listen. I spent my teenage years and my twenties working so hard to make sure I didn’t end up like my mom. That has always been my biggest fear. That’s why I studied so hard, that’s why I always pushed myself with everything I did.
